Answer

After numerous calls David did get in touch with someone in his cardiologists office who said that yes, given his condition he MUST "bridge" between going off coumadin and having surgery (yet it had been the cardiologist and cardiac surgeon who had told him he did not need to - in fact, we had questioned his cardiologist more than once at the last visit, and he insisted repeatedly that David just stop the coumadin and go on nothing else). At least now we have a single answer as to what he is to do and that is that he will stop coumadin today and will learn how to self-administer shots of lovenox this afternoon. I feel relieved that we now have clear direction from all facets of his care team, and it is not our choice but what is agreed upon medically as the right thing to do.

OOH...My belly knows all about lovenox and heparin...Sierra needed me to take about 600 shots during my pregnancy with her. It is really a piece of cake although those first ones are kind of scary and the size of the needle makes a big difference. Hopefully he will go back to the coumadin and off the shots after the surgery. GOOD LUCK DAVE my thoughts and prayers are with you.

Hi Amy!

Yes, I've been thinking of you as we've been looking ahead to this. Yes he will go back to Coumadin after this. He went to the clinic today and learned to give himself the shots. He said it was no problem and that he'd be just fine with it. I don't know what size needle he's using, but I'm going to watch tonight when he gives himself the injection. I'm curious . . .

Afterward he went to the clinic he went to the pharmacy to actually pick up the meds. He was charged $50, so he asked if that was the copay (thinking he might have been charged full price by accident). They assured him it was a copay and that full price for 4 days would have been close to $700 (was like $690.92 or something like that).

That is amazing!! At least we're getting our money's worth out of our insurance!
